An 18-year-old man presents to the emergency department with a stab wound to the abdomen which he sustained 5 hours ago. The patient was walking home when he was confronted by a thief and stabbed on the street. Vital signed are temperature 98° F (36.7° C), blood pressure 90/60 mmHg, and heart rate 150 beats/minute. On physical examination, he appears pale and has cool and clammy extremities. Surgical consultation is obtained and the patient is taken to the operating room. During laparotomy, the surgeon finds a stab wound in the middle third of the transverse colon. The bleeding is stopped and bowel anastomosis is performed.
